Someone is already watching it.
Every red box in PUBG lands somewhere, and everyone has a story about the one that got them killed. We tracked where they land and what happens in the minute after they hit the ground.
12.3% of red boxes had someone shooting right next to them within a minute of landing. The worst single box we found had 8 kills around it in that first minute.
Walk within 100m of a fresh red box and you are standing on ground that is 3.3 times deadlier than the ring right around it. That comparison is the whole point: a box that lands late looks dangerous no matter what, because everyone left alive is already there. Measuring the box against its own surroundings, in the same match, in the same minute, takes that excuse away.
Both bars are kills per square metre, so the outer ring being eight times bigger doesn't flatter it.

Hazard is measured on up to 3,000 boxes per map. Box counts and per-match rates use every one we saw.
When boxes land, and how often each one turned into a fight.
The bar and the grey number are boxes landed. The amber number is how often one drew a fight.
PUBG drops 126,433 packages in these matches, but only 30,351 of them are the red box everyone means. The rest is ordinary ground loot that spawns every match and nobody fights over.
PUBG spells it both ways in its own data — Carapackage and Carepackage — so we match on the crate id rather than the spelling.
We take every red-box landing, then count the kills within 100m of it in the following minute, and compare that to the kills in the 100–300m ring around it in that same minute of that same match. Both are converted to kills per square metre before comparing, because the ring covers eight times more ground. Only the red box counts as an airdrop — PUBG drops five other package types that are just ordinary loot.
One caveat worth stating plainly: PUBG's kill events record where the shooter was standing, not where the body fell. So every number here is fights happening at the box, not bodies lying next to it.
Built from match telemetry we collect ourselves. Numbers move as more matches come in.
